FOUR golfers have completed a marathon challenge at Carluke Golf Club — raising more than £8000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in the process.

Andy Colquohoun from Carluke together with Craig MacNicol, Stevie Frew and Graeme MacNicol completed the 72 hole challenge covering approx 20 miles in one day and raised £8500 for the cancer charity.

Craig said: "The day was very tiring but it wasn't as bad as we thought it would be.

"We thought if we could raise about £1000 each then we would be doing well so to double that is unbelievable.

"One of our mates saw an article in a golf magazine about the challenge and we decided to go for it.

"Three of us are members at Carluke and the level of support we got from the club was fantastic."

Beginning just before dawn on July 25, the team played four rounds of the course before finishing at 8pm.

They were then joined by Off the Ball and Offside presenter Tam Cowan for a charity night, which included a tombola, raffle and auction.

Prizes included four balls at a number of world famous golf courses, framed Ultimo lingerie signed by ex Hollyoaks star Gemma Atkinson, a helicopter flight, an overnight stay at the Dakota Hotel and portable DVDs.

Macmillan fundraising manager Angela McCormick said: "It was one of the hottest days of the year so far and very tiring for the guys.

"But they have raised a fantastic sum of money, which in turn will help many people affected by cancer".

The golfers would like to thank the helpers who drove the buggies, Ross MacNicol, Jim Smart, Brian Easton and Ian Brown and those who donated a prize.
